Okay, yes, of course knee-jerk reactions to shut someone/something down completely when a person is attempting in good faith to work through some complex, messy stuff, or to honestly represent their internal complexity/messiness, are, broadly speaking, generally harmful.

I don't really think there are many people out there who genuinely want art to be simplistic, always easily digestible, always "nice," but to whatever extent that "cancel culture" genuinely stands in opposition to art simply being challenging and complex, of course that's bad.

But I also think a lot of blatantly misogynistic or racist or otherwise hateful art gets a pass for appearing "sophisticated," "complex," "realistic," whatever, when it's really just regurgitating the same status quo garbage we've been seeing for decades.

Huh. Turns out these things are complicated, huh folks?

I get frustrated with critics who boil art down to just a collection of messages & values & leave no room to engage with aesthetic beauty, tone, structure, etc. I also get frustrated with critics who ignore the ideological values of works because hey, the cinematography is great.

very many people have recently told me that doing a critic's job is the same as trying to "cancel" comedians who are getting paid tens of millions of dollars per special
-
And how many people have recently told you that a critics job is worthless and critics are out of touch? Even Brie Larson says you are out of touch and she is the wokest one of us.

I mean, most cancels don’t have any lasting damage.
-
I mean, what is the takeaway with that? That it doesn't accomplish the stated goal and just ends up harassing someone for a week?

cancel culture discussions IMO tend to lack nuance in a discussion where it's VERY important to have nuance, because "queer ppl tear each other apart at the slightest provocation" and "consistent bad actors need to be removed from a community" can both be true simeltaneously
-
I think the smell test for me is that if you're coming from a good place, you say your piece and go. Ultimately you want the bad actor out of your life. But jumping on every opportunity to keep a one sided vendetta against everything they do, that is just harassment with a mask.
