I mean, a lot of us who feel a pronounced lack of connection and closeness in our lives are in some ways “driven by a need to be seen and loved.” (And to love, to participate in healthy, loving relationships.) In and of itself, this is not “incel-esque.” It’s human.

Right now, loneliness is, in its own way, one of the greatest threats to humankind. Yes, the incel threat absolutely must be addressed, but not while pathologizing everyone who is deeply afflicted by loneliness. I wish that instead of Joker, we were getting a high-profile film that looked at loneliness from a compassionate, humanizing perspective, a film about healing and hope. I hope we still do get those films.
