TBH, recording a podcast convo about OUATIH was tough for me, because there are so many angles from which I want to talk about that film, ways in which I want to condemn it, ways in which I appreciate and admire it... (1/3)

...and I feel like a malfunctioning robot trying to coherently mesh the complexity of all that (and my experience of it) into a 30-minute discussion rather than just picking a few isolated key points, which is probably what I should have done...

...but I also feel like OUATIH actively resists that kind of breaking down into individual elements, even though yes, many of those individual elements are deeply fucked up. Anyway, you can hear me malfunction over the movie here: https://feministfrequency.com/video/ffr-90-once-upon-a-time-in-hollywood/ …

I really don't get what people are saying about how fucked up this movie is. There was so much in this episode about imagining the person this movie was supposedly made for and then being mad about that idea. I don't get why QT is suddenly this pop feminist bugbear

I mean, the movie is misogynist as fuck. Cliff is a totes likable guy who, we learn in a throwaway joke moment, may have killed his obnoxious, nagging wife. None of the women in it are ppl. In the end we’re meant to revel in prolonged scenes of brutal violence toward women. Etc.

I definitely didn't read that we were supposed to think he was a good guy for a killing his wife. The guy starts off as a jackass, him killing his wife is a bad thing. He gets into a pissing contest with Bruce Lee and then ruins the car of the person who had just given him a 1/2

Him killing his wife is a "bad thing"? I mean, it's mainly supposed to be funny--it got a big laugh in my theater--and the film doesn't seem the least bit concerned with it. It's not like it's meant to complicate our feelings about Cliff or anything, who the film and audience...

...view with affection throughout. What you're saying about him "redeeming" himself for it in the end...that's not a thing in the movie at all. That's 100% something you're making up in your head and ascribing to the movie.

It's something we learn early on about him with effects for the rest of the movie, and in the end he even saves Leo's wife. It's not that he's redeemed by it but that he want to be and I think tries to by living his life for others.

Well yes, but that was also part of my initial reaction. Was it designed to be like that? I don't know. Was it weird? Yes. But honestly I haven't formed an opinion which I would call final. Maybe that is an achievement in itself with movies in general today.
