Octopath Traveler is not (IMO) a good game. And yes, critics sometimes need to review things they dislike, and then actually give those things negative reviews, consistent with their own opinions and perspective. There isn't nearly enough of that. Does that cover everything?

Completely agree that they could have more elegantly written a connection between the characters. I am completely in on the idea of more games presented as an anthology of loosely connected narratives though.

Yeah, if they do something deliberate with the concept, it certainly has potential.

Mmm. So kinda like the problem of Saga Frontier? I played the demo of Octo and it kinda felt a little soulless, was my one gripe. Like everyone knew what they were doing to MAKE GOOD JRPG but there was no... fire?

Never played Saga Frontier but yeah, Octopath's problem for me is one of soullessness. Competent JRPG mechanics are commonplace; in and of themselves they don't make a game good, IMO.
