If one were to move to a different, unfamiliar city, the sense of isolation would likely increase, at least at first.

I moved to Boston and felt the closest thing to instant "belonging" because of so many like-minded ppl there. Then I moved to the Bay Area and was finally able to figure out who I was because the culture gave me the space I needed. A city's culture can change your life.

I live in the North-East coast of Scotland in a fishing village in the back end of nowhere, I'm used to being isolated. It's a good thing I'm naturally introverted or I would feel quite lonely. You get used to it after a couple of decades
