It's actively embarrassing that people want to get caught up in the semantics of what a "concentration camp" is (because they're just ~so smart~ and know history ~so well~) but don't seem to care about what's actually taking place at these camps

I don't often tweet about these things anymore but this is *exactly* how the "rational" crowd approaches everything, like arguments about things like this are a game they need to win and not a fight for people's actual lives

There's something there about "playing devil's advocate" and making the entire discussion hypothetical, too. Something about eliminating empathy.

A great many of these people actually A) treat this as more a kind of debate-club game than any kind of discussion with real stakes and consequences and moral weight while simultaneously B) having a depressingly poor grasp of what it actually means to rigorously engage with ideas
