Why does the God of War fan always get to review the new God of War? Because if they don't, and they're the ones who give it a 2/10, all hell is going to break loose.

Yes but IMO that’s what needs to happen, over and over again until establishment game reviews no longer function as something that reinforces the narrow definition mainstream “gamers” (in general) have of what makes games good, or not good.

is tevis thompson willing to pony up the money so the person who dares to give god of war a 2/10 can check out of the internet immediately afterwards to (hopefully, not even definitely) dodge the onslaught of abuse they will no doubt receive

He shouldn’t have to. They should be protected by the publications they work for. This is all part of the problem, and acquiescing to fears over gamer retribution is, in the long term, not doing us any favors. We’ve got to challenge the culture.

no he shouldn't have to, but here's the thing: everybody's working with what they have and the reality we live in maybe an outlet could hire tevis to review the next big AAA game, be a contrarian about it, see how he feels about it then

I mean, I happen to know a thing or two about having the rage of gamers bearing down on you, and for what it’s worth, that’s part of the reason why I think what Tevis is saying is so important.

so who should be the sacrifice? or which, plural? how much sacrifice is worth it? for how long? there's a real tradeoff here, and the tradeoff is all for the want of making review scores "good" again. i say fuck a review score. not worth the trade.

basically, everybody in the industry would have to buckle down and sacrifice their health, their safety, most likely their income, for god knows how long, to rehabilitate... review scores. not a great trade.

So we throw up our hands and just sacrifice good, thoughtful, challenging, provocative, diverse game reviews forever as an offering to the gods of gamer rage? I think that is also doing us a kind of long-term harm by validating the systems that keep us trapped.

i think reviews don't need review scores to be USEFUL, and tevis thompson's obsession with them ain't useful either. "i want a diversity of opinion", sure, but he specifically wants it in the scores, he doesn't care nearly as much about the actual writing, cuz he can't fire on it

As I’ve said to others, I think that’s a misreading. I think he’s using scores as a shorthand for where one’s feelings about a game land, and being honest about that in one’s writing. Tevis cares deeply about writing.

then he can abandon the shorthand of review scores - he is an incredibly verbose writer, just a few notches down from tim rogers at his most self-indulgent - and say what actually matters.

"more people should have dissenting opinions" great, agreed. "the culture needs to change" great, agreed. "so, review scores-" nope, fuck 'em, they bring nothing but misery.
