Speaking as a (mostly) former reviewer, I see a lot of conversations that can and should be had about systemic issues that undermine the process. “These fools do not agree with the opinions of me, the objectively correct contrarian” is not one of those conversations.

Carolyn, I respect that you see value in his writing! For my part, though, I always find myself initially intrigued when I begin reading one of his pieces, but he always lands at the conclusion that reviews are bad because people like or value things he doesn’t. It’s frustrating.

I'm not Tevis, I can't speak for him and I shouldn't try. But I don't see him saying "Why don't you agree with me about X game?" Rather, I see him saying, "Why do you all always agree with each other?" And I think it's a very important question.

We don't though. Smart folks, at big sites and small ones, wrote about issues with games like Red Dead and GoW. The argument arises out of partially out of a lack of literacy, which makes it a shaky argument.

Outlier scores paint a target on a site's back. I know you all know this, but it's the simple answer to this very long conversation. Websites (and the vast majority of people at those sites, especially the ones at the top) are afraid of their audiences.

Why does the God of War fan always get to review the new God of War? Because if they don't, and they're the ones who give it a 2/10, all hell is going to break loose.

Yes but IMO that’s what needs to happen, over and over again until establishment game reviews no longer function as something that reinforces the narrow definition mainstream “gamers” (in general) have of what makes games good, or not good.

is tevis thompson willing to pony up the money so the person who dares to give god of war a 2/10 can check out of the internet immediately afterwards to (hopefully, not even definitely) dodge the onslaught of abuse they will no doubt receive

He shouldn’t have to. They should be protected by the publications they work for. This is all part of the problem, and acquiescing to fears over gamer retribution is, in the long term, not doing us any favors. We’ve got to challenge the culture.

no he shouldn't have to, but here's the thing: everybody's working with what they have and the reality we live in maybe an outlet could hire tevis to review the next big AAA game, be a contrarian about it, see how he feels about it then

i suspect if tevis was on the receiving end, he would be far, far less rowdy about his "THERE SHOULD BE MORE CRITICS SAYING OUT LOUD THAT RDR2 SUCKS (SPECIFICALLY IN THE FORMAT OF REVIEW SCORES)"
