But here's the thing, that's why I don't think his methods work at all. Because he makes it about the scores

Like, I was disappointed in Breath of the Wild. Opaque systems, wild swings in focus and difficulty, inconsistent connections with emergent gameplay, etc. But it would never occur to me to frame that as "critics gave it 90s and I'd have given it 60s"

It was that I felt like people, regardless of review scores or YouTube channels or whatever are willing to give Zeldas a free pass that I'm not, and I didn't. Wasn't review scores that had non gaming sites declare it the best since Ocarina of Time, it was people loving Zelda.

When I've read his stuff I get the idea that he thinks better application of scoring would solve the problem which is utterly baffling to me

Speaking as a (mostly) former reviewer, I see a lot of conversations that can and should be had about systemic issues that undermine the process. “These fools do not agree with the opinions of me, the objectively correct contrarian” is not one of those conversations.

Carolyn, I respect that you see value in his writing! For my part, though, I always find myself initially intrigued when I begin reading one of his pieces, but he always lands at the conclusion that reviews are bad because people like or value things he doesn’t. It’s frustrating.

I'm not Tevis, I can't speak for him and I shouldn't try. But I don't see him saying "Why don't you agree with me about X game?" Rather, I see him saying, "Why do you all always agree with each other?" And I think it's a very important question.

Like, I hated God of War. I feel like that game deserved maybe a 3/10 (with review text that supports that score). And I certainly understand why some gave it 9s and 10s or whatever. I don't expect everyone to agree with me. But EVERYONE giving it 9s and 10s? I mean, come on.

I just think he tends to argue it in a way that implies review scores are the end of the discussion, which I hate, as opposed to the start, which I'm fine with. It's an aesthetic disagreement. It IS an important question and I hate how he raises it.

Tom Chick being ornery in his corner of Metacritic does more to make that argument, IMO.

Well, Tevis certainly respects Tom Chick. I think he thinks game criticism would be well served by having a bunch of Tom Chicks (but all different Tom Chicks, not all the same Tom Chick) in what we might call "establishment" game review sites. I think that argument needs a voice.

We all need more Tom Chick, generally. -md
