I disagree, I think eviscerations of a work can be smart, revealing, and fascinating, and it is so, so, so, so very rare to ever have a game critic think that a game is worth eviscerating, and I think that's really unfortunate.
I guess I disagree that that's what he's doing. I mean, I liked RDR2 but don't feel in any way insulted by his trashing of it.

Except in the new essay he is no longer trashing a game. He is explicitly trashing anyone with the gall to not join him in this particular critical space.

I'm really not reading it that way. I'm reading it as "Why does the ENTIRE mainstream critical space adore this AAA game? Why wasn't there a SINGLE major critic who thought this game was bullshit and said as much?"
