I think "stage" & "level" have pretty much always been common terms for sections of a video game but a few other terms that I heard & used in the days of the Atari 2600 & early arcade games that I don't anymore were "screen" & "board," as in "I cleared the fifth board in Q*Bert."

I remember people calling Pac-Man levels "boards" too!

I heard “board” growing up in the South. Not sure why it fell out of favor.

In the arcade in the UK, both 'screen' and 'board' had traction in the arcade, 'level' and 'map' came later.

First I heard of it (I'm 40) (ug) and I grew up in New England, for one more data point. The word "level" seemed to be common in my memory. (Maybe a leaky data point.)

In Chicago, at the height of Pac-Man, screen/board were used, but so were some of the visual indicators. I disntinctly remember people talking in terms of how they got to the 5th key on Pac-Man, or Banana on Ms. PacMan, or the lang name of the level they got on Tron.
