I mean, I think Octopath Traveler is a bad game. That's not to take anything away from the hard work of all the people who made it. But I think critics need to have convictions about these things.
Games are extremely hard to make and I can see where Danny is coming from at the same time I think people spend too much time talking about the mechanics of a game instead of themes...and those are less subjective than how a game controls.
Definitely too lenient in scoring, has resulted in gamers having this attitude that if a game gets below 7 out of 10 it's terrible or, at best, just average.
It all comes across as a bit twee and patronising. "I don't say hate anymore, but that's what I actually meant" etc.
I'm not saying that at all. And of course, they're filmmakers. It's fine for them to talk about film that way. But a film critic can't internalize that mindset and still be a film critic.
I guess I’m talking about op-eds, negative news and YouTube essays so much of which tend to just dunk on games for being “bad”. And crucially the sheer volume of it. I have no problem with reviews being critical of course (and agree that they are often too lenient).
I’m guess I’m now just much more sensitive to people saying “this game is bad because they did X what a stupid decision” when I think there is usually a pragmatic design decision right under the surface. It seems too easy, and is just too common.
I’d add that games that go for big swings (like Vampyr this year) tend to get “bad” reviews (6 or 7 out of 10) while very safe games get all the awards and recognition. That PTA quote is specifically about an artsy film. Enthusiasm press are basically talking down artsy games.
Especially when many game developers are strong-armed by publishers to make games deceptive in quality or how they are monetized. Criticism is a required layer of consumer protection.
