the fundamental loneliness of the fallout 4 settlerpic.twitter.com/jkA9pGkoyn
so i've been doing this playthrough of a heavily modded Fallout 4 focusing just on building settlements. as such i've spent a LOT of time with the hundreds of randomly generated settler npcs that show up to each new town and start living their lives
fallout 4 settlers aren't much able to interact with one another. they'll farm together, sit next to one another, team up to take on invaders, and so forth. but they don't really converse with one another, outside of a possible story-related event if you progress the main quest.
i built out two towns on either side of a river. but unless i specifically tell a settler to go to that town, they will never walk across the bridge and say hello. each town may as well be floating in space, alone.pic.twitter.com/HVI25obu2P
you'll find the settlers standing near one another often enough. they'll bump into one another, alter their paths, but they don't touch. the only other living things they lay hands on are invading enemies, and that's only if they have no other weapon.pic.twitter.com/XqABsbwYJi
after spending hours and hours with these randomly generated people, all named Settler, i'm struck by how /lonely/ they are. they may occupy adjacent spaces, but they are completely unable to bridge the gaps on any personal level. empty cars driving down the highway.pic.twitter.com/D3ybUzr57G

this has been my thread about how i was struck by the loneliness of randomly generated video game npcs. thank you.
