It feels sorta like it was overshadowed by all the talk about Sorry to Bother You and BlacKkKlansman, as if the discourse can only support so many movies about black men at one time.
On that note, I saw all three of those in theaters and they all were preceded by nothing but trailers for “movies with black people”—mostly trailers I didn’t see in front of any other non-black-person movies. It was really blatant and a bummer.
Yep. Movies centering white people are "universal." Movies centering black people are still (often, anyway) "for black people."
Oh, absolutely. When I said Blindspotting was underseen, I also meant it was underreleased. A film that deserved more support from the studio/distributors/whoever determines those things.
