Just because some players aren't motivated to keep playing without traditional increases in power doesn't mean that every game should give that to them, that it's the one right way to do game design.

Right now my Arthur can afford to order prime rib every night from the finest saloon in Saint Denis. That's a meaningful increase in a particular kind of power IMO.

Are there any games that simulate life's actual power curve, where as you level up you get smarter and smarter until you realize you're getting weaker and weaker and then you die
-
Sword & Sworcery is a game with fantasy adventure trappings in which you lose hearts over the course of the game instead of gaining them.

I also like, as the article negatively mentions, the power regression too as it makes for impactful storytelling.

I just started the campaign again and let me tell you I am having a rough time without all my talismans and trinkets and customized guns to effectively defend myself and hunt. So I’m not sure if I necessarily agree with it. Also, should every goddamn game be an RPG with stats?
-
I've hardly gotten any talismans and whatnot so I didn't account for their impact on the game, I'm sure you're right. Definitely being able to use dead eye for longer now than I could early on feels like a significant increase in "power."

I'm curious. Why do you feel that they are a problem?
-
To be more specific, it’s not any individual power fantasy that I think is an issue, but the prevalence of power fantasies as a game design model. I think that, en masse, they encourage feelings of entitlement and beliefs in life as a meritocracy.

Every time I see RDR2 I think it is R2D2 which makes any of these stories more entertaining.
