And can’t we evaluate whether this is a worthwhile pursuit in the first place, rather than treating the pursuit as inherently good and then evaluating the game based on how well it recreates the past?

This “faithfulness” definitely has detractions IMO too. Many NPCs say the same boring things they did 20 yrs ago... and a lot of the sexism is perpetuated too...

ok, so i mean even that i don't get because just about everyone i've talked to about it that's been playing for 20-some-odd-years says it's all aesthetic with none of the bits that make the games actually fun—so tl;dr, it's basically a glorified tech demo, not a full pokémon game

I'd say apart from the nostalgia factor it's an excellent game for kids. There's challenge and strategy without too much complication, the fantasy of adventure and exploration away from home is strong
