Undertale is a game that I'm very glad exists--I admire its unconventional gameplay, its sense of humor, I appreciate that it has brought many people a great deal of joy--but that I think is quite bad. Insincere, manipulative, shallow in its exploration of empathy and connection

I bring this up not to just crap on something I know a lot of people love for the sake of it, but because, while I think a political lens in game crit is essential, I also think it needs to be tempered with other things.

I have no problem whatsoever with Undertale’s “politics.” I think in terms of representation and all the issues adjacent to that, it’s good. It handles all that stuff well. And that’s important. But it also can’t be everything, or = “Undertale is therefore a good game.”

It’s okay for game criticism to be complex, just as it’s okay for our feelings about and our relationships to games to be complex. A game can do many things we, generally speaking, want from games, and still leave a bad taste in our mouths.

And a game can do things we find “problematic” and still be great in many ways. We mustn’t ignore those issues at all, but we also can’t boil down games (or films, TV, etc.) to absolutely nothing but those issues.
