If you’re a video game critic, please take the work seriously. Don’t just view it as consumer advocacy. Toss out the old cliches. Games aren’t toasters. Be critical. Have a point of view. Games deserve great criticism.

It’s okay to dislike Undertale. It’s okay to dislike Octopath Traveler (a bad game IMO). It’s okay to dislike Super Metroid. It’s okay to dislike Bionic Commando (a fantastic game IMO). Don’t like or dislike things because they’re in the canon, or because you think others will.

Of course it’s also perfectly fine to champion these things, if you believe they’re deserving. Celebrating the wonderful is essential, but having a critical ethic invariably also sometimes necessitates arguing that things aren’t good.

That happens sometimes. I was appalled by Skyfall’s gender politics but as a piece of cinematic mythmaking I found it truly extraordinary.
