If you’re a video game critic, please take the work seriously. Don’t just view it as consumer advocacy. Toss out the old cliches. Games aren’t toasters. Be critical. Have a point of view. Games deserve great criticism.

Of course it’s also perfectly fine to champion these things, if you believe they’re deserving. Celebrating the wonderful is essential, but having a critical ethic invariably also sometimes necessitates arguing that things aren’t good.

I think there's a subset of critics who want to find things to love in a game because they themselves want to be invested. I myself find it hard to detach myself from that.
