I find the complaints about the lack of a centralized story in Octopath Traveler pretty strange. It is what it says on the tin: A series of more focused, personal stories set in a fantasy world. Pick the character you find most interesting and go.
If you're referring to the "travel banter," I personally find that a poor and paltry substitute for character interaction and relationship development that is seamlessly woven into the story.

Hmmm, I have to disagree there. I think it makes the already endearing characters lively. But different strokes for different folks as they say, no? I personally find this game very refreshing and love how even the npcs have their own little stories. It’s a nice change of pace.
