I find the complaints about the lack of a centralized story in Octopath Traveler pretty strange. It is what it says on the tin: A series of more focused, personal stories set in a fantasy world. Pick the character you find most interesting and go.
Not saying your opinion isn't valid, of course it is. But I also think criticism of this aspect of the game is totally fair...umm...game.

But they do interact. It’s only awkward in the character specific cut scenes. The character moments are wonderful.

If you're referring to the "travel banter," I personally find that a poor and paltry substitute for character interaction and relationship development that is seamlessly woven into the story.
