I think that many of us who belong to groups that have felt particularly targeted by harassers come to feel like there's a broad (though not absolute) correlation between people who strongly identify as "gamers" and those who have hostile, gatekeeping attitudes towards us.

That absolutely doesn't mean that everyone who loudly proclaims themselves a "gamer" is a racist/transphobic/whatever asshole, you're 100% right. At the same time, given the experiences I've had, it does initially put me on guard when I encounter someone who identifies that way.
