A handful of The Last Jedi haters in my mentions are offering up a fascinating misreading of the final showdown between Luke and Vader in RotJ. I think it's worth taking a moment to discuss because it may help explain why these guys hate Luke’s character so much in Episode VIII.pic.twitter.com/zI9ZY9JL9q

And a severe misunderstanding of Joseph Campbell— the monomyth is represented in TLJ via both Rey and Luke’s hero journeys. The rewrite campaign really needs to do some actual research if they want to seem like they aren’t just hating on diverse representations in sf

Since they ARE just hating on diverse representation in SF, I wouldn’t hold your breath.

I'm a POC, and I love Rey and Finn, and for me personally (the only person i can really speak for), I grew up reading extended universe stories of Luke as a jedi in his prime, and it sucks we'll never see that on film. We only see the before and after.

I enjoy the EU too. The point OP’s making is that Luke is a Jedi in his prime when he chooses not to fight, not to take up a weapon, not to seek victory through battle.

While I get that's what they were going for, it personally rings hollow. Star Wars has shown more often than not that the solution is in fact fighting.

not really. the OT culminated in Luke saving the galaxy by not fighting Vader. The PT culminated in the Empire because the Jedi went to war. Star Wars has shown that war leads to problems, and forgiveness leads to peace.

the Rebels saved the galaxy by blowing the Death Star II up. Luke’s family matters were fairly irrelevant.

Nothing says "I understand what the first six Star Wars films were all about" quite like the statement "Luke's family matters were fairly irrelevant."
