OK, but Hollywood so often casts women who are very much in line with cultural beauty standards as the “ugly” or “less desirable” woman, rather than actually casting women who aren’t in line with cultural beauty standards.

Also NOT SURE about Bradley Cooper directing Bradley Cooper in Making it with someone half his age the movie.
-
Sure, I’m wary of Cooper casting himself in the lead in yet another story humanizing the anguish of white men while comparatively so few films still do that with other kinds of people, but I still think it could be a good film.

That has nothing to do with my comment. You don't have to be "a great beauty" to be considered conventionally attractive, and to occasionally have society affirm for you that you are at least somewhat attractive.

Wasn’t that how Lady Gaga actually felt? Hence all the makeup etc. So, while, I don’t think she’s ugly she herself did feel like that so she kind of plays herself in this aspect. Which makes for different story: about self-confidence.

I just always think of that scene from Not Another Teen Movie where the"ugly" girl gets a makeover before the prom and it's just taking off her glasses and removing her ponytail. It's baffling that Hollywood is still using that trope.
