Caroline Dodds Pennock’s Tweets

In the next three weeks I am now apparently recording three podcasts, one interview, one television programme and one audiobook. Oh, and doing a photo shoot. (This is on top of teaching, admin and the grant application I have due on Tuesday.)

#YouAreHistory is my funny children's book that explores the surprising global history of 50 things a child uses everyday. It's vividly illustrated by @jennytaylordraw, is available in audiobook (read by me!), and you can get signed copies via @foxlanebooks - thanks!

I hope most of my students would agree that I make every effort to be as supportive as humanly possible, but this is a horrible idea. Students should be able to access a trained mental-health professional when they are in crisis not, frankly, me.

And one more time for the morning UCU crowd - hi, are you in ? Do you want the elected reps to vote for action that respects member wishes to start small, escalate and then go all out if needed? Show some support for this HEC motion by signing! 💪♥️

For the evening crowd: this HEC motion sets out what I think is a really good compromise between a) what the vast majority of union members want and b) what strategically will work best for most branches. Let me explain (on behalf of myself, not UCU Commons). 1/ twitter.com/UCUCommons/sta…

At current rates, someone on the list would have to wait THIRTY-FIVE YEARS for a first appointment. Remember that the next time you hear someone claiming that people are being ‘rushed’ into transitioning. This is an utterly disgraceful failure of our healthcare system.
Quote Tweet
I recently submitted a (FoI) Freedom of Information request to The Porterbrook Clinic, Sheffields (GIC) Gender Identity Clinic that I have been referred to. Their responses expose the shocking state of trans healthcare in the UK NHS. 🧵 1/12

As people have started to say nice things about the book, I just wanted to mention again the many friends and colleagues who have helped me with #OnSavageShores. THANK YOU. (Special mention to the awesome , who was a kind critical reader of every word of the draft.)

I have now received a full apology from the Chief Editor and Editorial Board who do not contest any of the facts I stated in my letter. The Guest Editor was unwilling to offer a full apology and has resigned from the Editorial Board. It's taken 18 months all told.

Last week a journal editor in my chosen field refused to send to reviewers a paper I've co-authored, simply because I have drawn on Critical Race Theory in previous work. I look forward to the broadsheets running interviews with me about this attempt at cancellation.

It’s the second day of the #DiaDeMuertos festival. What people often don’t realise is that it’s actually a celebration of family remembrance. 1st November is known as Día de los angelitos (little angels), which is dedicated to children who have died.

There is a distressingly large number of people who are prepared to give away the principle of Gillick Competence solely to bar trans children, on the basis parents act for the best. Which is ironic given how many of them would deny affirming treatment WITH parental consent.

Assuming for a moment that we haven’t all known this was happening for years, and that Julie is genuinely surprised, I would like to know what she is going to do about it, because I would very much like to believe that actual feminism is not dead.

I was horrified enough by this to find five-minutes to email my MP, , about 's comments. It is extraordinarily disappointing to see forgo their progressive roots and buy wholesale into culture-war anti-trans rhetoric. A shameful development.

Apropos of nothing: literally no one denies that Britain was involved in promoting the abolition of slavery (eventually). The point is that public history has tended to practise a sleight of hand that emphasises abolition rather than all the slavery that came before it…

Lots of pro-Tory (often explicitly homophobic) accounts going after because of this ‘correction’. But even the denial at least half confirms his point, which is that the latest govt merry-go-round has caused yet more delays to the vital ban on conversion therapy.

Media around ‘migrant crisis’ is off the scale. So a reminder - we’re talking about around 75K people - the same capacity as Old Trafford. Numbers of small boat crossings have grown as other routes have closed. There is no migrant crisis. There’s a safe routes crisis.

My comment on @davidfrum 's poor reading of Time's Monster in this unhelpful essay. My book does not describe a "trend" of rejecting "ideals of detachment in favor of a passionate new engagement." This is incredibly distressing - young children, behind barbed wire. What kind of country are we, to treat suffering children and their families like this?

Dozens of young children are being held at Manston detention camp in Kent. Mothers, fathers, children and babies from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and elsewhere. We went today and heard them chanting for their freedom. This is persecution. FREE THEM AND CLOSE IT DOWN.

Dear . I just heard you on , and please be clear that (a) these are asylum seekers, not just ‘migrants’, and (b) the numbers are only ‘terrifying’ because it is terrifying to think of so many people risking their lives to seek safety, not from a national PoV.
