1/ Twetestorm time: As Figma hits that crazy growth point, I’ve been reflecting on the role grief plays in startups. The company is shedding its skin on a daily basis, a constant cycle of death and rebirth. If you stick along for the ride, you’re always saying goodbye...

When I joined Figma in Jan 2017 designers told me they’d never use a web-based tool. A lot changed in my 4 yrs there. I shared behind the scenes stories from our early days (dumpster diving for VCs & more!). My 1st podcast chat in yrs. Thx 🤗

I’ll be honest, there was no "bet." After yrs of journalism turmoil, all I dared to dream for when I joined Figma was a stable job for 2 yrs. I begged Figma's early investor to promise me the company had 2 years in it. He said sure hoped so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Rec request: I’m looking for a good book to read on organizational culture — specifically how to seed + spread operational practices. (Bonus points for teaching said ideas through stories.)

By pure luck, on Friday I narrowly missed being in a 30-round drive-by shooting on my corner (Guerrero and 14th) that killed a random bystander. For some reason, police just covered the blood in sand and left it there. Guess the universe wants to take my mind off covid.

3/ He did tons of interviews, and it’s stocked w stories from front lines of FB, Amazon, Goog, Microsoft (+ antihero Apple). Must read for anyone who wants to beat the titans or understand why they haven’t toppled despite backlash.

2/ It comes out in less than a week (!) on my bday, and it was his bday yesterday. Soooo...consider this a shameless gift request. He’s worked so hard on this for 2+ years, so the COVID timing = OOF. I’m so proud of this kid & (full disclosure) helped edit, so it makes me 😭.

When COVID stuff took off, 1 of my Asian American roommates got spit on outside our apt in SF. After that she no longer felt safe alone outside. We made a roomie pact & tell her when we're taking a walk, food shopping, etc in case she needs the air. This country breaks my heart

11/ In more fun thinking: I'm plotting how to get a giant projector with its own wifi hotspot & camera into her delivery room, so her family can video call in for the birth — at least the early stage. 😂 Do you own a cool tech setup like this we could borrow a few days Apr 17?

8/ She is scared about her child starving if she has breastfeeding complications and people have bought up all the baby formula. She bought a month's worth but knows that won't be enough if breastfeeding doesn't work.

7/ She’s frantically reading everything she can about how it might affect the baby if she contracts COVID-19 before or after birth. Some stuff is promising, other stuff isn’t, she’s struggling to know what to believe.
