Heads up for folks interested in urban forestry, ecosystem services, & biodiversity (especially species at risk & birds!), I’ll be announcing a postdoc opportunity soon. Details to come in January, just putting this out there for folks mulling over next steps over the holidays

There are some incredible birds around right now, just outside your door. Birds Canada's Urban Program Coordinator, Andrés Jiménez, talks with CBC about the joys and challenges of winter birding in the city.

(Also, for those of you who record seminars - consider offering those recordings back to the speaker! They can be really useful for future teaching, or even just self-reflection/improvement)

Great reading list here! I’ve certainly been enjoying reading and learning more about urban evolution over the past year thanks to so many great colleagues pushing the field forward.

Trying to ease into the crush of a busy new semester by breaking up the day with some outdoor activity. Perks of working from home again⛷

Colleagues! As we enter another hectic semester, I have many recorded lectures on various urban ecology topics (plus a handful of recorded seminar talks on urban ecology/urban forestry/ecosystem services). Teach these topics and need a “guest lecture” in a pinch? Please reach out

Instead of tweeting new year's resolutions, or spreading general assholery like some dried up profs, I'm gonna send out hope for your 2022. This year, I hope that you: 1) get to try a fancy new alcoholic (or non) beverage 2) have a slice of completely decedent cake

But do not rage against those who are advocating, like you are, for climate action. We are all in this together.

Great crash course in evolution here (can I just assign this thread for my first few weeks of intro evo-eco this semester 🤔)

I’m sure I’ll continue to grow (and fail, and make mistakes) in my mentoring, but maintaining a supportive lab atmosphere where the lines of communication are open will always be a priority. Here’s to another pandemic semester 😬 for all the mentors out there - onwards!

It’s so easy to dwell on mistakes and feel like I haven’t accomplished nearly enough as a new(ish) prof, but watching these students support one another, cheer each other on, and pick each other up through a very challenging few years has been *such* a bright light.

Apparently it’s . Mentoring is without a doubt the hardest, and most rewarding part of being a prof (and where I continue to learn the most). So grateful for the trainees who’ve chosen to work with me and the positive lab atmosphere they’ve helped build.

A truly delightful thread, particularly for those of us who have lived on both sides of the border and heard a lot of “wait, *what* did you just call that?”

If you look at the sheet, you can see that Quebec has conducted 2X more tests/capita than any other Canadian region since Nov 15, and its overall % test positivity is lower than the national average. Huh? Isn't QC doing worse than everywhere else? No.

Slightly longer line right now, but still reasonable! We waited just over an hour. I was asked for faculty ID (or paystub), partner (also an educator) wasn’t asked for any proof. Go get those boosters 💉 💉 💉 💪🏼
