I didn’t cover this hearing. But from past experience, it’s a tricky area: anti-vaccination advocates say things that are not true. As a reporter, you strive to present all sides of an issue. But when it comes to vaccines, this leads to false balance. So here’s what I try to do:https://twitter.com/CBCToronto/status/1176219568110559236 …

Avoid repeating false claims when possible. When you must refer to a person’s belief or claim for context, focus on details that are fact-based. And try to immediately follow up with a sentence explaining why the phrase isn’t true...

For instance, a (false) claim that vaccines are dangerous can/should be immediately followed by a fact-based sentence that points out overwhelming evidence shows vaccines are safe and effective. And serious side effects are extremely rare.

And avoid the sensational. Today, some people compared vaccines to genocide. This is wrong on many levels, but some outlets included it, without any context explaining why this is completely off base.

It’s also important to present facts about vaccine safety. Rely on official, credible sources, like @WHO @GovCanHealth and @CDCgov, as well as studies published in respected journals. This report from @PublicHealthON is well done and easy to understand: https://www.publichealthontario.ca/-/media/documents/annual-vaccine-safety-report-2017.pdf?la=en …

Bottom line: vaccine safety isn’t up for debate. They work, are safe and save millions of lives. To pretend otherwise and present the opposing view as legitimate can put people at risk. Coincidentally, we should find out Oct. 2 if the US loses its measles elimination status.
