I need help choosing a new laptop, must be lightweight, have good battery, 16GB ram, 13"-15" screen and be able to easily run Linux. Top contenders currently are @Dell XPS 13, @system76 Galago or Darter, or @lenovoUS Yoga C930.

I would vote against Yoga considering the reliability and longevity we've seen from the batch we got at Endless. Lenovo ThinkPad yes, Yoga no.

I endorse this message. Also, Dell supports LVFS so if you care about firmware updates coming from manufacturers the XPS 13 is the only model I'd go for in that list.

That makes it seem like System76 does not have any firmware updates. We have a CLI and GUI tool for scheduling firmware updates, and then flashing it -- all written in Rust. https://i.imgur.com/r7o40mk.png We've also been working on open source firmware w/ help from Intel.

You guys do great work, but not being in the LVFS ecosystem is not one of them. It is not great for the end user either, the update process is less convenient as it requires more reboots, doesn't work across distros...

The UEFI capsule upgrade process is an open standard, I for the life of me can't understand why you've chosen to go alone. This actually makes it more difficult to get more vendors to put their firmware in there, it's a lose-lose.

And since you get in the middle, there is no auditability, LVFS now being moved to the LinuxFoundation means we can audit source code of the server side and we know the firmware comes straight from the manufacturer in charge.

I have
@system76 in high regard, but I can't recommend its systems over Dell and Lenovo in this regard as long as you go it alone.2 replies 0 retweets 1 like
It's very encouraging the LVFS is moving to the Linux Foundation. That's a great move for the project.
