This is how I feel too. Satoshi just couldn't see that far into the future. I feel that we need a major crash to chase away speculators and then to decrease transaction times and fees using segwit + lightning and then we may find it becoming something in 2+ years.

Point is, a major crash will probably kill the entire ecosystem, and BTC will be thrown back to where its core strength (anonymity) is relevant and made it big: drug and other contraband trade in the dark net.
