Asked for examples of sexual harassment at law schools, ChatGPT named a GW prof accused of touching a student on a class trip to Alaska, citing a WashPost story.
The prof is real. The rest was made up.

Watermelon originated in NE Africa and brought to the Americas by slaves. After emancipation, free BP grew and sold watermelons, making the fruit a symbol of their freedom. Southern Whites, threatened by this, responded by making the fruit a symbol of BP’s perceived laziness.

I have reinstalled Twitter to respond to this story and make sure my voice is fully heard. I am Casey.
My real name is Alex but my mom decided it would be best to hide it for anonymity. But this is my story, not hers. This is not the free press’s story.

This chart of Sydney rental costs is astounding, disturbing and deeply sad in equal measure.
Even a household on a median household income is on the cusp of rental stress for a unit. In decades past they could have just bought a house...

1. Services Australia are monitoring metadata to determine whether you're in a relationship.

Story of police killing a little girl's goat is really sticking with me.
As such, I read the actual lawsuit. If anything, some of the details therein make it even worse.
If there is any justice, their needs to be a large punitive judgment in this case.
Details follow. 🧵
Quote Tweet
A young girl didn’t want to slaughter the goat she raised for 4H. The state senator who bought the goat at auction agreed to let it live out its days eating weeds. But sheriff’s deputies drove 500 miles to kill the goat and teach a 9-year-old a lesson.

I still use Twitter because the following feed is a useful current events filter. Without retweet attribution I can't trust the filter isn't being bypassed, and I can't remove people who no longer contribute positively to it. Would make the site finally useless to me.
Show this thread
Oh wait, it seems like on the web UI they've just removed attribution for retweets. Is it a bug, is it a joke, or is it the future? Who knows?

Things I never expected to see: a D&D-branded movie getting generally good word of mouth.
Quote Tweet
Back from the Dungeons & Dragons movie, which outperformed my expectations. It was fun and hummed along at a sprightly clip, and I was never bored. Plus I laughed consistently which was a plus. The movie didn't take itself seriously, but not at the cost of insulting its audience.

Every time we heard this, folks rejected it in favor of the folklore than video games are for teenagers.

Hell, I paid for Livejournal even though I had one of those legacy early adopter accounts that got half the paid features for free, just because I got value from the site and wanted it to continue to exist.
Show this thread
The funny part is that a year ago, if Twitter asked me to pay $5-10/year for a couple of random features and a little badge saying I was a supporter, I would have, just like I did 20 years ago with Livejournal.
