    To acquire nuclear-powered submarines might well make sense for 🇦🇺 given its location, but 🇫🇷 will go ballistic over lost contract for its conventional subs, and costs and timing of new nuclear subs might well cause new drama in the years ahead.

    Only six countries in the world — America, Britain, China, France, India and Russia — currently operate nuclear-powered submarines. Australia may now become the unlikely seventh.

    A day of missile tests on the Korean Peninsula today. First 🇰🇵 fired two ballistic missiles and then 🇰🇷 demonstrated a first in firing a ballistic missiles from a submerged submarine. Things are obviously heating up.

    I continue to believe that 🇪🇺 needs a new competitiveness agenda if it should avoid lagging further behind. The capital markets union, a deep and complete single market, digital intgration, living up to old pledges on R&D funding and an aggressive trade strategy is needed.

    Many good ideas in , but somewhat complacent on the global competitiveness of 🇪🇺 economy. Latest IMF figures see growth in the Eurozone behind both 🇺🇸 and 🇨🇳 this year and next. But I was certainly relieved that the words strategic autonomy didn’t figure in the speech.
