The protocol shim sounds like a really good approach -- might be easier to get a laptop involved and use the CDJs as controllers?
That'd be the easy option, but from my (limited) experience the workflow was quite different (at least Traktor+CDJ vs "pure" CDJ)
(I will confess that I quite dislike the workflow of CDJs, but I'd love to practice with them since that's what is in virtually every club!)
