Online archivists have created a probably illegal open-access directory of over 5,000 scientific studies about coronaviruses that anyone can read without having to pay. “[paywalled research] is an immoral situation, and it's an ongoing tragedy.”

To be honest, if I had to do pair programming full time, I’d probably quit the job after a short while It’s an extremely efficient way of getting some things done but I cannot imagine working like that 40h/week

We ended up with over 1,200 applications for the programmer opening at Basecamp. If you’re having trouble attracting talent, feel free to copy our playbook: Hire remote, be explicit about pay, detail job exhaustively.

What if React errors had the full props objects in each component stack?

“At Tesla, using AI to solve self-driving isn’t just icing on the cake, it the cake” - Join AI at Tesla! It reports directly to me & we meet/email/text almost every day. My actions, not just words, show how critically I view (benign) AI.

You've identified the main tension - moving the logic into the DB is always faster but harder to version control and maintain. The best practice for a long time has been to keep all but the most necessary perf optimizations in external code and treat DBs as dumb stores.

check out this intro to dataviz, react + threejs. teaches setup, performance, instancing and even effects. also crazy to see our libs work so well together cross-platform, it's animating these meshes with react-spring . seems very fast considering thousands of objects.

With the rise of remote work I’m surprised there isn’t a bigger offering of webcams with proper aperture.

Going fully remote was nice, but the real benefit was in going fully asynchronous. Here are a list of the benefits we've seen at : A thread 👇🏽

This is a remarkable detail. The 8 people detained in Wuhan for spreading rumours about the mysterious pneumonia then just starting its spread through the city were all doctors.

Maybe - nobody can really tell the future. Personally I'm not convinced of that. I think many teams would just override to singleQuote: true, as they do now. But that's not a discussion for Prettier to wade into - a code formatter should do the common thing for the language.

The last REST API that I have to deal with on a daily basis is from and it's fucking frustrating. REST takes so much guessing and retrying I wanna punch a door. Even the best docs in the world cannot help. Choose GraphQL by default, it's 2020.

I think spotting, planning for and following through on fixing foundational tech debt, without resorting to big rewrites, is one of the hardest things you can do in software development.
