On this otherwise grey day a pair of goldfinches brought a splash of colour into our garden. I hope they'll stay a while. All the bird photos from our garden are now taken through the window. Doesn't produce pin-sharp photos but the birds need to eat undisturbed.

A coyote and a badger use a culvert as a wildlife crossing to pass under a busy California highway together. Coyotes and badgers are known to hunt together. 🎥Peninsula Open Space Trust

Going to show this to my class as a way of conceptualizing "ground up" evolution of flight. Imagine a cursorial predator using wings to navigate the environment and chase down prey in the same way. Super cool.

Blue Jay is more of a Grab and Dash kind of bird. In the blink of an eye he lands, grabs, and is gone again.

The chickadees often toss out the sunflower seeds because they prefer the peanuts in the mix. But eventually everything gets eaten before we leave. This one is just landing, at 1/4000 second. They are fast!

Springtails (snow fleas) on a mild winter day, eating + drinking microscopic matter on snow. A protein in their bodies prevents them freezing so all year long they eat decaying organic matter and contribute to healthy forest floor decomposition.

Surprisingly, it is a Pileated Woodpecker. We tend to think that's a black bird but when he spreads his wings ...¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's World Wetlands Day, celebrating the vital roles of fens, marshes, bogs, swamps, deltas, mangroves, as water-keepers, carbon-storers, flood-slowers, life-makers... Tell me the best writing you know about these overlooked & threatened places. 📷Engel9
