I get an odd sense of confort knowing that today’s crash victims all got their one lifetime, even if it was pitifully brief. What could have been is no longer possible, so I focus on what we had. Mourn the loss, grieve for the families, and love every brief moment they lived.

I've sadly had to use that quote too many times this year as a balm for fresh grief of my wife, as an explanation to my 20-something son searching for answers at the passing of a classmate. As anchor for myself when confronted with tragedy. It's simple, wise, profound.

This line was also quoted in a My Chemical Romance song and, as a teenager, I was floored by how pretty and impactful it was. Didn't read Sandman until I was 20 and then I was like, Gerard Way didn't even write it?!

I hadn’t read Sandman, but I had read Neil Gaiman so I had read that line out of context before, and when I heard it in a My Chem song, I was once again floored with its elegance, it just seemed so right, and I was happy Gerard had reminded me of it

Love this quote, I often like twinning it with my fave line from diskworlds terry pratchett “It is said that your life flashes before your eyes just before you die. That is true, it's called Life.”
