It's taken a while for me to talk about Vanessa Guillen's death. It hit close to home: My mother was stationed at Fort Hood, the very first home I ever lived in was Killeen. My parents often told me stories of their service in the Army.

The good ones were about being stationed abroad with their fellow service members, learning about new cultures and trying new foods. They instilled in me a love of travel and of immersing myself in other cultures.

I am proud of the Texans and the communities around the country organizing around justice and change. Just like our system of policing, our military needs a broader discussion about updated practices of accountability, especially when it comes to sexual harassment.
