Merci Mack joins three other Black trans women who have been killed during Pride Month alone, along with Brayla Stone, Dominique Fells, and Riah Milton. Merci Mack was just 22 years old at the time of her death. She deserved a full life with every opportunity available afforded to her. As Reverend King said, injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

We must say their names. We must remember what we did in this time to show up for our transgender neighbors. In the past five years, more transgender people have been killed in Texas than any other state in the country. Half of those happened right here in Dallas.

As a nation, we must take action to prevent these senseless killings by ensuring that trans and LGBTQ+ youth have access to safe housing and shelters, mental health resources, healthcare, and quality education.

It is up to every one of us to show up as allies in this fight. While there are no legislative solutions that will end racism, transphobia, or homophobia, it is imperative that our elected officials are held accountable for not providing the appropriate solutions we need.

Black Trans Lives Matter today, tomorrow, and every other day. It's time our elected officials legislated accordingly.
