As a kid I was on free lunch and the downside was often the lunches were awful. But kids who didn’t want their milk would return them, and other kids could grab them from a table, and I often lived off those free-cycled milks. Those kids were far more decent than these assholes

What your smart peers did on their own is now a program in my school district. We designate trays for unwanted fruits, milks, etc. They get filled half way through the period and by the end of lunch they're empty. We have far less waste and, more importantly, healthier kids.

They figure out a way to pass them out without stigma? The trip to the table at my middle school was a walk of shame. (It was worth it, but still not fun.)

The kids don't seem to think anything of it. Give an apple, take an apple. At this point they're not connecting hunger with more or less income, especially after we made breakfast universally free and folded the reduced lunch program into free lunch.
