We've had the Spanish beaten out of us. When my grandparents went to school, they were hit for speaking Spanish. My mother too. For both my African American and Latino heritages, I'll never have a complete picture of them because of violent and intentional oppression. The best I can offer my sons is art and language that has somehow been lovingly preserved by other people. I'll never recover it all.
