I went to college with a ton of Latinx homies who spoke little to no Spanish. Parents made them so they wouldn’t develop an “accent” so they wouldn’t be discriminated against.
They used to beat both my parents and grandparents at school for speaking Spanish, so by the time I was born they saw my not speaking it as a protective measure. I'll be struggling to speak the language well for the rest of my life, but that doesn't make me not Latina.

Same with my grandparents. They made a choice, and their children went to college as a result.
