"Black history is not just for Black people - Black history is Canadian history." The Hon. Jean Augustine was the first Black woman to serve as a Cabinet Minister & MP in Canada, & played an integral role in bringing Black History Month to Canada.

I use a lot of language around "choice" as a teacher. It's important, though, to remember that not all student behaviors are true choices. Very frequently, in my experience, they are anxiety and stress responses, some beyond the students' immediate control.

Not sure if any of this applies to you or your organization? It's easy to find out. Send out a short survey and ask your employees. If you think you have supports in place, but they are not feeling effectively supported, then it's time to make some changes.

If you only respond to a crisis, and don't help efforts to avoid reaching a crisis, or if your supportive stance expires after a few days as if there is a time limit to recovery, it's time to bring in professional help to review and re-design your systems.

If your response when mental health issues manifest in the workplace is simply to shuffle that employee off to a different department or location, then you really need to reflect on whether your goal is to help or to cover up.

If the people you count on to keep your business or organization going are regularly hearing pointed comments about absenteeism when they take needed time off, the message you are sending is not one of support.

If your employees are afraid to use their sick days for fear of being put on some sort of "attendance support program", they may not perceive you as supporting their mental health.

If your employees are afraid to disclose their needs or ask for accommodations because respect for confidentiality in your organization varies based on who the supervisor is, you might have a systemic issue that needs to be addressed.

Okay, let's take a moment to about the disparity between employers saying they support mental health and what they do to actively support employees who may experience mental health challenges or who are trying to self care. Thread⤵️
