Incorrect, social media was invented by Milennials, we can start with Tom from Myspace, that was the real foray into Social Media then came Facebook & Twitter which basically made it what it is today. Friendster predated Myspace but by less than 5yrs.

I just googled this issue, and learned that in 1997, Six Degrees was the first. So let’s google some more, and see what came next. Facebook has got to fit in there, somewhere… Yes?

I think if you keep digging you'll eventually find something that relates to someone else's uninformed idea of what constitutes social media.
