This week &I published the 1st RCT testing if DLPFC tDCS could enhance CBT response in depression. Unprecedented for tDCS/depression trials (I think!) we also have before+after fMRI, which yielded a possible biomarker We started in 2013. /thread

I’ll be live on BBC Cambridgeshire show tonight (re-broadcast on Radio National ABC Australia tomorrow) answering public questions about the brain, including why we don’t diagnose mental heath disorders with an MRI &more.

But I am under no illusions: every decision I made to stay which eventually made the UK home was easy & effortless because of my EU citizenship. I am very grateful & very sorry that others will not be able to have the wondrous experience I have had of moving away and finding home

as an EU citizen, I was eligible for British-specific funding for my PhD, jobs without visas, and incredible, free-at-the-point-of-delivery healthcare (to name but a few). I feel culturally&emotionally that Britain is my home, and it is where I hope to continue my research career

I’ve felt more at home in the UK than I’ve felt anywhere else in the world. In my case, my country of birth is different from the countries I grew up in, which ~= my citizenships. But I’ve never been made to feel a ‘citizen of nowhere’ by Brits. On the contrary, I belong:

Then I finished my PhD & looked for post-docs (at this point looking everywhere because I needed a job) but then my now-wife got a massive grant to start her lab in where I had the opportunity to train with a scientist whose work I had followed for years — so I stayed

Around that time, I discovered that I wanted to become a neuroscientist 🧠 👩‍🔬, and (most importantly for doing a PhD), because I met a scientist that I wanted to train with more than anything (). His lab was in the UK — so I stayed.

Not infrequently, I’m asked why I stayed in the UK. I moved here when I was 18, and, like many EU immigrants, I expected to leave after uni. But I liked the UK too much to leave after 3yrs so I went to live in East London with my university friends— and I stayed. /thread 🇬🇧🇪🇺

Darwin did foresee the possibility for altruism and cooperation & cooperation is widely recognised as an effective strategy to compete at different scales. So, no, I don't think we need to 'leave the Darwinian consensus behind'.

Sumo wrestlers and basketball players ⛹️‍♀️ may be statistically indistinguishable (p=0.1) if you compare their weights or height, but multivariable approach (height&weight) has >90% classification accuracy. This is an essential lesson for psychiatric neuroimaging!

Solid, fun behavioural psychopharmacology here. LSD vs. MDMA vs. d-amphetamine study. LSD and MDMA similar maximums of 'drug liking' (both larger than amphetamine) but LSD, unsurprisingly, keeps that going longer. +many other findings.

Turing awardee Leslie Lamport argues that you should never debug your algorithm in code - formal (logic) methods find bugs that cannot be found through any other technique. “You don’t produce 10x shorter code by better programming, but by thinking about the algorithm”
