First, real mercs would NEVER compromise a mission using their real IDs. Second, the CIA &/or the State Dept would never hire mercs living in those conditions as that kind of desperation would jeopardize the mission. Third...EIGHT men for a coup attempt? PLEASE!! Just my 2 cents.

No it's pretty normal. Mercenaries are different from a government in how they lack long term ideological commitment to the conflict. To carry a passport means they can identify themselves as US citizens in case of capture, and this is very much in their own personal interest.
