1) The problem w/ the argument that “the internet is not going away” & equating Facebook w/ the internet, is, obviously, that Facebook is not the internet (though it wants to be). It is a proprietary silo that is antithetical to the benefits of an open internet.

2) “Getting rid of your car to avoid wrecks” is a horrible analogy for deleting FB. FB isn’t a car. FB is a fence that corrals cars in a certain part of the city & brings services from other parts of the city to the walled off space in exchange for your behavior data.

“Even if you’re not on it, they have a shadow profile of you anyway” !!!

Right? I want to know more about the basis for that statement.

thank you

You’re welcome. I hadn’t heard of them before today, but often wondered why, in the past, I would get endless invitations to open a Facebook account.

people need noscript or equivalent on their computers and NOT to use phones or tablets. Disallow http://facebook.com and .net, avoid facebook, and that will help a good deal. Google, as it's the only decent search engine, is another matter.

Agreed. It takes about 5 minutes of reading to learn how to adopt better privacy practices as an internet user. Block cookies, disable JavaScript and use private browsing mode. Oh and don't use Chrome or Google as user tracking is a core part of Google's business model.

That’s misleading advice.

It's a start - sorry, I can't fit an essay on internet security in 240 characters.

I started with Data and Goliath and took 98% of the advice in it. But it's a longish book.

Exactly this. It is easy to explain away that users are daft for not understanding that any free social service is profiting off selling the data you post and/or advertising based on it. What most don't realize is what else FB is uploading to their servers.

Metadata of every text you send (not messenger, regular SMS), GPS coordinates of every location you travel to, activating the Mic and using idle cpu cycles to quietly process audio, it goes on and on. Very few people would sign up if this was made apparent.

Zuck is lying his face off. I just got a realtor ad on FB sidebar from someone my family used and I've never even googled.
