When the news of the torture during the 2nd Iraq War broke, my father was furious. He was in Germany when WWII ended, and his brother, a bomber pilot, had been killed just a few months earlier. Dad said Americans do not torture, ever.

There’s nothing to debate. That comment in itself is troublesome. Torture puts our military men and women in danger. It is unethical. It violates due process and human rights. It’s a poison to democracy.
