Americans went to Normandy to save the world, not to prop up blood and soil. Americans were buried in France as they fell dead from Nazi bullets. Universal Rights of Man was important once upon a time. Modernism retreats as technology advances.

If the French Revolution/ Philosophes serve, Mr Schama’s generalization of the ‘enlightenment’ is incorrect. Further, the global resistance to uncontrolled migration is not just among ‘ultra-nationalists’.
-
Hannah Arendt famously said: "If one is attacked as a Jew, one must defend oneself as a Jew. Not as a German, not as a world-citizen, not as an upholder of the Rights of Man, or whatever.” Does the prof object to this insight, too?
-
Yes, of course. The Nazis oppressed many groups who separately would have been annihilated, but collectively triumphed. It was precisely alliances between peoples- not unity among a people- that won ww2 and was its great lesson. And Arendt was daft to have missed it.

Way-finding is lost on nationalists. May’s judgement is akin to the bark of a dog in the pitch of the night. Come morning, citizens comfortable “anywhere” work daily with dedicated, not small-minded, family, friends, neighbors, and communities to keep the light on across borders.

Idiots. Thirty Years war, the Treaty of Westphalia is why we have nation states and it was genius and stopped so much violence compared to before. Yet these globalists want to push this nonsense that will lead to violence. Maybe they want that to reduce humans on planet earth

Nobody should take seriously the phony outrage manifested by this man who will defend Israel's 'right' to butcher Palestinian and Lebanese children by the shed-load in so-called 'self-defence'.Hypocrisy in spades.

Our biggest most urgent issues are global. This is not a time for drawing borders and tightening identities to the smaller common denominator. It is time for global solutions; they can only come from so inclined citizens of the world.

I've never seen Simon Schama, master of, among many other things, the wry observation, so animated.

Saddest and most depressing thing is that the people that would benefit the most from this cannot even understand most of the words. Lack of education breeds tribalism.

And thus the problem with Donald. He believes none of his actions will effect anyone beyond our boarders. Or more precisely, he doesn't care.
