“There will be a time” when giving birth as a world leader won’t be worthy of comment, says NZ Prime Minister @jacindaardern, a new mother. “But I have to accept, and I had to accept, that when it comes to world leaders, it was rare.”pic.twitter.com/MX7iymlCYc

We had one in Julia Gillard but sadly the men & the media couldn't cope.

.@JuliaGillard was attacked for choosing not to have children but would also have been attacked if. like @jacindaardern, she chose to have a child while she was PM. Australia is a much more misogynistic society than NZ.

it was hard watching from here in New Zealand, but at that time our ex-PM thought it was appropriate to pull the pony tail of a woman working in a cafe (despite his wife telling him not to)... so we were embarrassed too. We can share Jacinda ;-)

Deservedly so! Many of us in Australia look on longingly, while we struggle through the hijinks of low quality blokes knocking each other out of the position that none of them deserve. Not a national vision or principled policy in sight!

The last time I felt this proud of a NZ PM was when David Lange, also a Labour PM, proclaimed NZ nuclear free and refused US nuclear powered submarines into NZ territory. Leaders are meant to inspire integrity and challenge the so called norms. Adern has an A+ from this NZ voter.

Then why are you commenting on it? Oh, and btw, only 5% of world leaders are women and only 2 (ever) have given birth while leaders. Get used to the fact that until this becomes a lot more common (ie, you guys move over and make space), it's newsworthy.
