I really tried to do portfolio work on top of my day job, but I nearly burnt out. I don't know how some of you do it. I need to relax after work, talk to my girlfriend, play a game, watch a film, rest my brain. If this means I don't get the jobs I want in the future so be it.
I think as an industry we need to stop promoting the idea that you *need* to keep producing portfolio work. You work a full time job in this industry & likely devote your creative energy there, you are only going to continue to get better 
Sadly this is currently seen by a large amount of people as "not passionate enough"
If someone says that to you & it's unjustified (i.e. you put a lot of energy into your full time work) then it's just a red flag to not work with them imo
